Exploring Depth, Memory, and the Space Within

In I Am PoOi 3.0, PoOi introduces a body of work that reflects his evolving exploration of material, heritage, and the unseen dimensions of existence. This solo exhibition at Art Central Hong Kong highlights his dual mastery of sculptural forms and printmaking, creating a dialogue between the tactile and the visual, the physical and the metaphysical.

Rooted in Heritage, Expanded in Vision

Born in 1981 in Rembau, Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia, PoOi’s work is deeply intertwined with the Minangkabau culture of his homeland. His intricate wood arrangements, meticulously carved and assembled, draw from this heritage, paying homage to its traditions while transforming them into contemporary expressions. These wood motifs, layered with precision, form the core of his practice, enhanced by sleek fiberglass surfaces.

Printmaking: Capturing the Essence of Wood

In this latest exhibition, Po Oi expands his artistic language through printmaking. Using wood textures and grain, he imprints these natural patterns onto canvas, preserving the memory and history of the material in a new form. These prints complement his sculptures, offering a contemplative exploration of wood’s narrative potential while connecting his work to broader themes of time, memory, and transformation.

Seeds: A New Beginning

A highlight of I Am PoOi 3.0 is his latest series of seed sculptures. These bean-like forms symbolize growth and potential, with their smooth fiberglass exteriors concealing intricate wood motifs within. The interplay between the hidden and the revealed mirrors life’s dualities and invites viewers to reflect on what lies beneath the surface. This new exploration showcases PoOi’s ability to innovate while staying true to his material and conceptual roots.

A Global Presence

PoOi’s seed sculptures extend beyond the walls of the gallery. Three of these works have been collected for the Malaysian Pavilion at the World Expo 2025 in Osaka, Japan. Their inclusion reflects his rising prominence on the international stage and his ability to translate cultural specificity into universal themes of sustainability, interconnectedness, and renewal.

Depth Beyond Surface

Whether through the layered complexity of his wood sculptures or the imprinted grain of his prints, PoOi’s works transcend the physical, offering a meditative space for introspection. In I Am PoOi 3.0, his art captures the beauty of transformation, the tension between tradition and innovation, and the infinite possibilities contained within material and form.
