The “Cross Currents” exhibition fosters dialogue between the contemporary art landscapes of the Philippines and Malaysia, bridging creative communities and highlighting shared cultural threads, distinct techniques, and historical influences. Curated by Scarlette Lee (Malaysia) and Marionne Contreras (Philippines), this initiative challenges boundaries and explores how local narratives resonate in broader, cross-cultural contexts.
Artistic Exchange and Cultural Dialogue
At its heart, “Cross Currents” celebrates artistic exchange, showcasing Filipino and Malaysian artists exploring the intersection of tradition and modernity. Featuring diverse expressions across themes, mediums, and styles, the exhibition emphasizes both commonalities and contrasts, celebrating each nation’s cultural heritage and global relevance.
Fostering Collaboration and Innovation
More than a visual showcase, “Cross Currents” is a platform for meaningful dialogue through artist talks, panel discussions, and interactive events. These engagements deepen cultural understanding, inspire fresh artistic approaches, and spark ongoing collaborations, enriching the creative landscapes of both nations.
A Celebration of Heritage and Contemporary Art
This collaboration critically examines the shared heritage of the Philippines and Malaysia while spotlighting each artist’s innovative vision. By blending tradition with contemporary practices, “Cross Currents” underscores the importance of cross-cultural engagement in shaping dynamic, relevant art for a global audience.
The mundane is often overlooked, yet it holds the quiet pulse of life…
Duniaku yang Kecil / Aking Munting Mundo turns its gaze toward the ordinary—the small, unremarkable moments that make up our days. It asks: what worlds exist in the spaces we pass by, in the routines we no longer notice, in the gestures too small to name?
This exhibition takes shape as a modular installation composed of works by multiple artists. Like windows opening onto different lives, each piece stands alone yet joins others to form a constellation of small worlds—a shifting landscape of everyday realities and imaginations.
Rather than seeking spectacle, Duniaku yang Kecil / Aking Munting Mundo, invites artists to dwell in the everyday. The theme remains intentionally open, allowing each artist to interpret the mundane in their own way—whether through intimacy or irony, abstraction or detail. Together, the works transform the gallery into an immersive space where the ordinary unfolds in unexpected ways.
