The “Cross Currents” exhibition fosters dialogue between the contemporary art landscapes of the Philippines and Malaysia, bridging creative communities and highlighting shared cultural threads, distinct techniques, and historical influences. Curated by Scarlette Lee (Malaysia) and Marionne Contreras (Philippines), this initiative challenges boundaries and explores how local narratives resonate in broader, cross-cultural contexts.
Artistic Exchange and Cultural Dialogue
At its heart, “Cross Currents” celebrates artistic exchange, showcasing Filipino and Malaysian artists exploring the intersection of tradition and modernity. Featuring diverse expressions across themes, mediums, and styles, the exhibition emphasizes both commonalities and contrasts, celebrating each nation’s cultural heritage and global relevance.
Fostering Collaboration and Innovation
More than a visual showcase, “Cross Currents” is a platform for meaningful dialogue through artist talks, panel discussions, and interactive events. These engagements deepen cultural understanding, inspire fresh artistic approaches, and spark ongoing collaborations, enriching the creative landscapes of both nations.
A Celebration of Heritage and Contemporary Art
This collaboration critically examines the shared heritage of the Philippines and Malaysia while spotlighting each artist’s innovative vision. By blending tradition with contemporary practices, “Cross Currents” underscores the importance of cross-cultural engagement in shaping dynamic, relevant art for a global audience.
Surround Me With All The Beautiful Things will be a salon type group show under Core Contemporary Art, Malaysia for Art Fair Philippines 2025.
It will explore the human desire for beauty and how it shapes our perceptions, emotions, and connections with the world. The exhibition will gather a diverse range of Filipino artists and Malaysian artists to create an environment that celebrates beauty in all its forms, while also examining its deeper meanings and the complexities of its pursuit and, sometimes, its denial.
