Oeuvre of Movement No. 1
Stepping foot into another surreal realm; you are greeted with the haunting echo of strings quartet playing amidst an endless space; seemingly devoid of limit or boundary. Instead, your eyes are delighted by an arresting view of neverending horizon of sinuous seascapes and billowing clouds; only to envelope you in a brim of breathlessness and bliss. As you drift deeper into a realm of melancholic fantasy; voices are heard singing in a rhapsody of poetry and rhymes.
This exhibition compells all three of your psychological, mental and emotional senses. “Oeuvre of Movement No.1” encompases the three life body works of “M.Shafarin Ghani – Art, Poetry and Music” all in one show.
Malaysia has seen the birth and growth of successful contemporary artists in the making of art history since the times of Ibrahim Hussein and Khoo Sui Hoe. However one may find an artist who shares his passion for art and music taking in the form of seascapes almost rare in presence of Malaysia’s long history of art. Young self-taught artist; M.Shafarin Ghani takes his first bold move in bringing his ART out of his humble zinc-roof studio into this exhibition “Oeuvre of Movement No.1” to share with us his life’s passion.
14 years ago, Shafarin embarked on his self-searching journey where he began teaching himself about painting, music and literature through books and research. At even a tender age of 16, he has had his first experience at a group painting exhibition ; followed by a solo exhibition by the time he turned 17. Unlike most adolescents at that time who would be more involved in co-curricular activties; he was diligently composing music scores and writing poetry. Most would have not even imagined the humble background he was brought up in, achieving the 3 amazing feats under a zinc roof of his small “attap” home.
Shafarin describes his painting as undulating harmonious sounds singing in your mind and vivid colours flowing in your eyes. When you delve in Shafarin’s quasi-musical waves in painted oil, you seem to hear the déjà vu of Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata” orchestrating in its gloom and mystery. Using a reknown techniques “chiaroscuro” perfected by Rembrandt which means light-dark in Italian, Shafarin has skillfully conjured a poetic rhythm of waves composed of rich dark shadows teamed with hints of accented highlights; liquid arcs catching alight in the volatile temperaments of the sea. The contrapuntal rhythms of light and shade seem to reverberate within the Art and the viewer, conjuring atmospheric moods to stir one’s innermost psyche.
