Introduction

Post-pandemic, there seems to be a shift towards a more global visual of contemporary art while retaining a unique cultural identity. Core Design Gallery, who has been part of the Malaysian Contemporary art scene for the past 13 years, has been privy to the development and changes within the art ecosystem. In the past 2 years, especially from pre-pandemic to post-pandemic, as a gallery seeking international exposure and awareness, we have learned, during our visits and participation in various Asian countries’ art fairs, that there is a shift towards a more global visual of contemporary art while still maintaining a unique cultural identity. Armed with this knowledge, we have shared it with various artists and have actively pushed and developed this “global visual” of contemporary art. “Yellow” is one of the specially curated exhibitions that attempts to showcase the latest exploration from a group of mixed-medium artists who seriously delve into this direction.

Atiqah Khairul Anuar

An image of the back of a canvas. With a very bright yellow post-it note. Post-it note is used as a reminder to anyone. To write a note, a reminder or just a plain text that gives a meaning to someone. It being placed at the back of a canvas rather makes it redundant. A place not anyone can see. or rather to be seen after further inspections. What makes it worse is that this bright yellow post-it note does not have any inscription on it.

The carbon black and bright ‘Lamborghini Yellow’ colour were the main components to be infused with the image of sunflower life cycle. It is to depicted the main development stages of sunflower growth. From seed to sprout, then growth to adult with blooming flower, down to the falls and finally harvesting – which the flower eventually dried out and the petals goes away with the wind and the seed will fall so it can germinate again-regrowth. Life is a straight line with time as a measurement of important event during life cycle, it is joy, sadness, pain, wealth and family. It is the time to be remembered and perished. So be good to it.

Family Story is an artwork about family that shares moments of memories that reminisces from a memory to a moment. Depicting how beautiful was the occasion of gathering with family and friends while catching up on what was left after their last meeting. Sharing bits of their lives where everyone just talks about any stories or topics filled with lively expressions. Portraying a setting full of nostalgic elements through alike pieces of broken puzzle.

My latest artwork was inspired by the geometric abstract art form where I have conceived the visuals through three main factors of development such as architecture, cityscapes and nature. Turning these enticing forms into organic and geometric definitely change the perspective of my observation to explore beyond canvas.

In my current works, I am exploring abstract organic forms that are free-flowing and expansive. Each selection of organic forms in my artwork represents the symbolism of God’s creation in this world. If we observe and study cosmology, even the smallest particles that God has created are predominantly or entirely organic. For me, these organic forms symbolize “LIFE.” When we truly observe the diverse range of organic forms in God’s creation, we witness their inherent properties, uniqueness, beauty, and captivating colors that often defy verbal expression.

One of the reasons I have chosen organic forms in my work is due to my surroundings. I live and grew up in a village area, immersed in the presence of organic flora and fauna on a daily basis. My life as an artist has led me to contemplate the nature created by God, which manifests in enticing organic forms that inspire and influence my artistic production. Furthermore, the assortment of organic forms and the range of color combinations in my work symbolize my personal journey to adeptly organize and navigate life’s challenges in various forms and colors, especially amidst the modern world of urbanization. At times, these challenges may even test my beliefs and identity as a Muslim and a Malay, if left uncontrolled.

From a physical perspective, my artworks incorporate a combination of wood and fiberglass as materials. I have chosen wood and fiberglass due to my familiarity and expertise in working with them. The fiberglass surface represents the modern world of urbanization, while the wooden surface signifies my identity as a Muslim and a Malay.

My latest work explores the complex relationship between consumerism and the need for financial stability. In a world where our value is often defined by the things we own and the brands we wear, it’s easy to feel like we’re constantly chasing after the next big purchase. But what happens when we don’t have the means to keep up with this never-ending cycle of consumption? What happens when we’re forced to scavenge for materials, repurpose discarded objects, and make do with what we have?

My work is a reflection of these questions. Using college discarded material, I aim to highlight the wastefulness of our society and the potential of discarded items to be transformed into something beautiful and meaningful. By repurposing these materials, I’m also making a statement about the commodification of art and the pressure on artists to produce work that is marketable and profitable.

This work is a part of my Neon Series that started in the 1990s. It is an exploration of various spatial methods that include lighting through painting, sculpture, installation and architecture.

Kekaguman Kecantikan Alam, highlights layers of the color spectrum around us, from big phenomena like the big bang, nebula, galaxy, etc. to small miracles like our own everyday sustenance.

The artwork Introverted Blooms is an exploration of the relationship between introversion and the natural world. Through the use of muted colors and delicate brushwork, I aim to capture the quiet beauty of flowers in isolation. The flowers are depicted as introverted beings themselves, introspectively turning inward as they bloom. The composition of the piece is intentionally sparse, evoking a sense of stillness and introspection. My hope is that viewers will be able to connect with the introspective qualities of the blooms and find a sense of peace and reflection within themselves.
